The vulva, vagina, uterus (womb), and ovaries are all parts of the female reproductive system, and a gynecologist is a specialty physician who treats diseases that affect them. The two disciplines of gynecology and obstetrics both focus on the female reproductive system. Gynecology covers treating women who are not pregnant, whereas Obstetrics deals with pregnancy and all of the procedures and issues that go along with it. Gynecology includes both the medical and surgical sciences. Cancers, fibroids, etc. must be surgically removed, whereas many gynecological ailments require hormonal and other pharmacological therapy. After earning their medical degree, gynecologists must pursue at least 6 years of further specialized study. Gynecologists identify and manage illnesses that only affect women. They are able to provide surgical, hormonal, and medicinal treatments.
